Position Summary:
MSU Denver's TRIO Upward Bound Program (TRIO), is currently seeking mentor/tutors to support students that attend six Denver Public Schools: Abraham Lincoln High School, East High School, Manual High School, North High School, West Early College, and West Leadership Academy who are first generation high school students (first in their family to attend college), with a desire to attend college.

TRiO's Fall 2021 semester will focus on online mentoring and tutoring in core subjects as needed, i.e., English, Social Studies, Foreign Language, Math or Science. (You will only tutor students in subjects you are competent in). Additionally, you will assist the Assistant Director and other core staff with the planning and facilitation of program activities and workshops and provide some data entry and administrative support. #LI-DNI

Duties/Responsibilities:
Tutor students in general high school subjects (including small-group and individual tutoring)
Maintain an environment conducive to learning.
Assess and monitor students progress in tutoring sessions and ones own tutoring skills
Pass on knowledge, insights, and expertise about college preparation
Serve as a role model for participants, demonstrating integrity and accountability
Assist students in developing effective study skills and setting goals
Collaborate with instructors during classes; assist in classroom management
Actively listen, provide information, encouragement, and guidance to students
Communicate regularly with students during tutoring, keeping them on-task
Report regularly to specified admin staff regarding students progress and needs
Chaperone participants during local field trips and/or assist with educational workshops (mostly on a Friday, but an occasional Saturday.)
Track daily attendance and homework progress and completion
Input tutoring and contact notes into student database
Track homework completion of student participants
Attend required trainings and weekly staff meetings and daily staff check-ins

Required Qualifications:
MUST BE A STUDENT ENROLLED AT AN APPROVED COLORADO HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION
Content knowledge in at least one of the following areas: math, language arts, science, and other academic content areas
Demonstrate commitment to serving high-need urban youth and families
Ability to work with diverse populations, including being sensitive to the diverse needs, learning styles, and abilities of Upward Bound students
Commitment to participate for a full academic year
Ability to work at least 2 days a week, Monday-Thursday 3:00-6:30 p.m. and chaperone occasional Fridays and Saturdays for field trips and student engagement
Current student enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credit hours
College sophomore, junior, or senior standing is preferred, although qualified freshman applicants will be considered.
Remain in good academic and judicial standing at higher institution
Initiative, punctuality, dependability, discipline, and self-confidence
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to motivate and encourage youth
Ability to maintain confidentiality

Preferred Qualifications:
Tutoring/mentoring or teaching experience
Previous training or work experience with youth, particularly high school youth from diverse backgrounds
Bilingual in English and Spanish
CPR and First Aid Certified (preferred, but will provide training)
